SILVAR Member Named One of REALTOR® Magazine’s Top ’30 Under 30′

Christine Ko

Congratulations to SILVAR member Christine Ko, a REALTOR®  with Bridgepointe Group, San Jose, on being selected one of 30 rising young stars in REALTOR® Magazine’s 2013 Class of 30 Under 30!

Each year hundreds of REALTORS® from around the country apply to be one of the magazine’s 30 honorees. In determining who makes the “30 Under 30” list, REALTOR® Magazine staff looks for candidates who are successful in the real estate business and have demonstrated skill, success, creativity, and leadership in their careers.

Born and raised in the Bay Area, Ko is a graduate of Leland High School and has an economics degree from UC – San Diego. While her knowledge and love of Silicon Valley sparked her interest in real estate, Ko’s reason for choosing real estate as a career is personal. At the beginning of the recession and crash of the housing market, she witnessed family and friends lose their homes. These families were Asian immigrants who came to America with very little, but with the commitment to work hard to become homeowners.

“The loss of their homes was mostly due to the widespread misrepresentation of those in the mortgage and real estate industry towards non-English speaking home buyers. Seeing what happened to these families after they had worked for decades to obtain the American dream convinced me to obtain my license and enter into real estate at one of the worst times,” explains Ko. It became her personal mission “to serve the Asian community and tackle its unique set of home buying challenges.”

As part of REALTOR® Magazine’s elite group of up and coming REALTORS®, Ko wants to emphasize that real estate should not only be about transactions, but also about involvement in community. “As a trusted REALTOR®, I hold myself to a higher standard of commitment to my community, both as a leader and volunteer. I strongly believe that my direct investment of time and energy translates into creating stronger neighborhoods and a sense of community,” says Ko.

Ko is a member of SILVAR, the California Association of REALTORS®, National Association of REALTORS® and the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA). She has served as Ambassador for AREAAedge and is currently on the board of directors of AREAA – Silicon Valley as social media/pr chair.

Ko wants to focus on educating young professionals on becoming future homeowners. She is the 2012-2013 president of the Korean American Professional Society (KAPS) of the Bay Area, which promotes cultural awareness and provides community service events and professional networking opportunities. She also teaches English to Korean immigrants and sets up educational workshops at local schools to teach the younger generation the basics of financial responsibility.

Given the fact that less than 9 percent of REALTORS® are under the age of 35, Ko says real estate is a career that lacks representation of the younger generation. “As young REALTORS®, it is important to personally and professionally focus on fostering growth in communities and our local economy. This is the best way to represent the new generation of home buyers,” says Ko.

The May 15 issue of REALTOR® Magazine will feature Ko and the other honorees of the 2013 Class of 30 Under 30.
